Beijing - Waves up to 30 metres high swept 14 people into the
turbulent upper reaches of the Mekong River following a huge landslide
into the river in south-western China's Yunnan province, state media
said on Tuesday. Rescue workers recovered two bodies from the river,
which is known as the Lancang in China, and were still searching for
12 others missing since they were swept away in the early hours of
Monday, the semi-official China News Service said.

An estimated 13 hectares of land plunged into the river near the
Xiaowan hydroelectric power station, creating giant waves that
engulfed the 14 farmers as they camped nearby, the agency said.

The volume of water in the swollen river hampered rescue work, it
said.

Floods and landslides have already killed more than 200 people in
China during this summer summer's rainy season.

KUNMING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Two people are dead and another 12 are
missing after a landslide triggered high waves on a river in southwest
China's Yunnan Province, local authorities said Tuesday.

About 13 hectares of land slid into the Lancang River, the upper
reaches of the Mekong, at about 3 a.m. Monday in the Xiaowan
Hydropower Station reservoir area in Fengqing County, Lincang City,
said Li Huasong, chief of the Communist Party of China Fengqing County
Committee.

The rocks and mud produced waves up to 30 meters high, engulfing
14 farmers working in a temporary camp along the river, he said.

Two bodies had been recovered as of Tuesday morning. Rescuers are
searching the 12 missing, but the size of the river made the rescue
difficult, he said.
