Yunnan-Guangdong Power Transfer to expand by building southern
transmission line

During the 11th Five-Year Period, the Yunnan-Guangdong Power Transfer
will be substantially scaled up, in order to alleviate the huge
electricity shortfall in the rapidly developing cities and provinces
including Yunnan and the overload problem in the northern transmission
line. Yunnan Power Grid Company (a member of China Southern Power
Grid) will build a 5 billion-yuan, 1,880-km 500-kV southern
transmission line. The project is expected to complete by next June.
After its completion, the volume of power transfer will reach 4.8
million kW, and it will connect with the Greater Mekong Sub-region
(GMS) Power Grid.

According to sources, the volumne of power transfer will rise from 1.6
million kW in 2005 to 7.9 million kW in 2010. The maximum volume of
northern transmission line-Luoping sub-station is only 3.3 million kW,
which cannot afford the increasing demand for power transfer. So the
Yunnan Power Grid will build a transmission line from Yingjiang county
of Dehong Prefecture (in southwestern Yunnan, close to Ruili) to
Wenshan Prefecture and the Yunnan-Guangxi border. Yanshan Sub-station
in Wenshan Prefecture, as the first sub-station in southern line,
which is almost completely built, will be in full operation next
April.

A spokesperson from the Planning and Development Department of the
Yunnan Power Grid Company said that the southern line project not only
helps transfer the electricity of 22.5 billion kWh from the power
stations in western and southwestern Yunnan, but also will also
connect the 600,000 kW power stations in Ruili River, and 240,000 kW
power stations in Daying River, which currently have difficulties to
connect with Yunnan Power Grid.

According to sources, the southern line will be located along the
southern part of Yunnan, and radiate the neighbouring countries like
Laos, Burma and Vietnam. It is also connected to sub-stations in
Yingjiang, Boshang and Mojiang. Each connection is the potential point
of power trade with foreign countries, which will strike the base for
the future GMS power interconnection. Southern line will become the
major channel between the power grids of China and GMS countries.
