PM ‘misled public’

Bangkok Post 30 May 2008

MEKONG:  Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has misled the public in pushing ahead with his ambitious plans to divert water from the Mekong river and build three large dams across the Mekong between Thailand and Laos, said the Thai People’s Network for the Mekong.

The group yesterday accused Mr Samak of trying to mislead the public into believing the plan to divert water and build three hydropower dams on the Mekong posed no harm to people or the environment.

The group urged Mr Samak not to sign any agreements on water management with Laos until there is disclosure of information, public hearings and the completion of environmental impact assessments.

They also warned that the projects, if implemented, could tarnish relations between countries sharing the Mekong river, without thorough discussions with them.

“Thailand should not reap benefits from exploiting the natural resources of neighbouring countries,” said the letter.
