Krai; a
species of riverine plant that grows in dry season when the sand dunes
and rapids emerg from the water; by the time of flood season the fruits
and leaves will become fish's food especially for herbivorous fish, such
as giant catfish.
Kai; a
fresh waterweed growing on submerged rapids and pebbles, is significant
food for fish and human along the river. Villagers along the Mekong
usually collect Kai from March to May for family consumption and sale
(one could earn up to 500-600 Baht per day for selling Kai in local markets).
But this year (2002), Kai has decreased along the river from Chiang Saen
to Chiang Kong. Villagers in Chiang Kong from Ban Hai Bai to Ban
Muang Garn reported that no Kai could be collected this yeear; they
suspected that it could be the results of the water level fluctuation
affected by the dam gates closing-opening in China for blasting in the
upstream river since the beginning of the year.
